Jim and his wife Janice are lifelong residents of Mount Pearl. They have two sons, James and Jonathon, and three grandchildren, James, Addison and Benjamin.
Jim is a Memorial University graduate – Bachelor of Arts; Bachelor of Arts (Honours) – Bachelor of Education; Master of Arts (Environmental Management). Jim received many academic awards including $50,000 in scholarships and two Memorial University Medals for Academic Excellence in both Geography and Education.
Jim retired after teaching in Mount Pearl high schools for 27 years. In 2022, Jim received the Newfoundland and Labrador Premier’s Award for Teaching Innovation. Early in his career, Jim taught two years with the Department of Geography at Memorial University and worked as a socio-economic consultant.
For over 40 Years, Jim has been active in our community. In 2025, he was recognized with the King Charles III Coronation Medal for his dedicated community service. Jim has served on Mount Pearl City Council since 2007, including 12 years as Deputy Mayor. With his 18 years of municipal experience, in June, 2025 Jim was elected to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities National Board of Directors. As a teacher, Jim took over 850 students to Gros Morne National Park and 650 students to 25 countries on educational excursions. He also served as a Scouts Canada leader and as a coach – 25 years coaching minor hockey and two years in soccer.
Jim is an avid nature lover and enjoys spending time with his wife and family at their cabin in Cupids.
