Meet the Candidates – Mike Peach for Council

Mike was born and raised in Mount Pearl. He excelled academically but struggled with social problems throughout school for reasons he couldn’t understand, and which the public school system had neither the resources nor knowledge to effectively address. He suffered similar problems professionally and in the military, eventually being diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder as an adult.

Since then, he has studied psychological and neurological differences, codifying social processes and conventions and developing precise communication methods to compensate for those differences and correct misunderstandings. Informed by his past, he became passionate about justice, law, transparency, and helping marginalized individuals. He volunteers for several social justice causes and advocates for better representation and support for neurodivergent individuals, particularly more participation from neurominorities in developing support initiatives for their communities.

Mike is talented at solving puzzles and identifying patterns, disciplined in researching solutions to problems, and driven to share information and ideas collaboratively to reach mutual understanding. He has worked as a Math, Science, and English tutor for fifteen years, and is eager to use the communication skills he has spent his life learning to ensure that constituents are consulted and well-informed regarding council’s decisions, policies, and priorities.

Mike believes that a city council’s diverse responsibilities call for its members to have similarly diverse abilities and perspectives, and to employ scientific, evidence-based, systems-level analyses in their decision-making and planning to employ knowledge effectively, limit bias, and allocate your tax dollars efficiently and strategically. He is well-suited to be one such member.
